Master's Degree in Mathematics

General description of the programme

The Master's Degree in Mathematics offered by UMONS is designed to be flexible in order to best meet your professional goals.

Whichever focus you choose, you will be guided by a programme supervisor. Various projects and internships will give you true added value on the job market.

Profile of the programme

The Master's programme is designed as a coherent whole to be spread out over two years. It is the perfect opportunity to look to the future and determine what profession(s) you would like to practice.

Your programme supervisor will guide you through the various choices to make that will best prepare you for the careers you are interested in.

You may choose from four focuses. Whichever one you choose, internships, projects, and your thesis will give you ample opportunities to further your knowledge of the mathematical topics you are interested in and in which you can invest yourself in while taking advantage of individualised guidance.

During the first year of the Master's programme, you will be asked to carry out an "integrated project". It can be an individual or group projected and will be designed according to your interests and objectives. You will be able to choose the theme of your work based on discussions with the different members of the Institute. To illustrate the type of project you can undertake, in 2008, three students along with a professor conducted a project in robotics. They created "intelligent robots" that were able to solve a Rubik's cube or escape from a maze without help.

In the second year, you will have the opportunity to carry out an internship — in Belgium or abroad — according to the focus you have chosen. The goal of this internship is to let you make your first steps in the world of work.

Students who are registered for the professional focus (careers in computer science or finance) will carry out their internship in a business.  Those who are registered for the teaching focus will have internships in secondary schools.  Students who are registered for the research focus will carry out an internship in a university.

You will be able to have a reference to the option added to your diploma, which will reflect the additional aptitudes you have acquired. During the course of your Master's programme, you will also be able to take courses in another university with which the Institute has signed an agreement.

The four focuses are described below.

Research focus, careers in research.

Surrounded by a dynamic team of researchers who have an international reputation, you will have privileged entry into today's research world.

You will specialise in one of the themes we work on:

  • functional analysis and Banach spaces
  • partial differential equations and numerical analysis
  • algebraic geometry
  • calculability and model theory
  • game verification and theory
  • linear chaos in infinite dimensions
  • operational research
  • theoretical physics
  • databases
  • software engineering.


Professional focus, careers in computer science.

Your capacity for rigour and reasoning and skills with formal languages will enable you to learn advanced concepts in computer science and to deal with topics that demand a high level of abstract thinking.

Depending in your tastes and your ambition, you could for example help develop new, secure languages for the Web, for science bookstores, for code transformation tools, for mobile phone voting programmes, for robotics,... This will provide you an excellent calling card when looking for work.

Professional focus, careers in finance.

You will learn the fundamental mathematical tools that are used in finance as well as the basic models of financial products.

This focus is rich in probabilities and statistics courses and is thus excellent training for dealing with the field of biostatistics. Most of our students carried out an internship in banking or insurance and found a job there. They have also worked with the police (modelling of break-ins) and biologists (statistical analysise of plankton using the "R" software programme).

Teaching focus, careers in education.

This curriculum includes the higher secondary school teacher certification programme (AESS). At UMONS, you will have a chance to go well beyond the 30 credits foreseen by the law! You will ne able to carry out various projects as well as your thesis with the research unit for mathematics teaching. The members of the unit will provide you the teaching tools that will be directly used in your teaching career. The Institute also has privileged relations with the CREM (*).

(*) The CREM is the reference research centre for mathematics teaching in the French Community of Belgium.

Key learning outcomes

After completing this curriculum, students will be able to:

  • reason with the necessary rigour while applying all the notions they have learned in their coursework
  • carry out independent and group work 
  • solve innumerable mathematical problems that come up in their professional life.


Occupational profiles of graduates

Other than the traditional outlets of research and teaching (higher secondary school and higher education), the Master's Degree in Mathematics opens the door to numerous careers that require rigour, abstraction and formal manipulation capabilities, with quantitative and computer skills as well as autonomy.  Here are just a few examples of the various professions you will be able to practice:

  • managing financial portfolios
  • creating new insurance products
  • assessing the quality of production lines using statistical methods
  • designing sophisticated algorithms to represent computer networks 
  • developing computer programmes with high value added in startups, etc.


The holders of a Master’s Degree in Mathematics can also be hired in basic or applied science programmes if they continue their studies and complete a doctoral dissertation.

Access to further studies

The  Master’s Degree in Mathematics gives access to Advanced Master’s Degrees (as the Master's Degree in Actuarial Science) and to doctoral studies.

Master’s Degree holders can also register for the higher secondary school teacher certification programme.
