Tuesday, 23November 2010, the non-profit businesses Materia Nova and Mutlitel celebrated their tenth birthday in the presence of various noteworthy personalities, including the Walloon Region Minister for Research, Jean-Marc Nollet and Mayor of Mons, Elio Di Rupo.
The creation of these two research centres goes back to 2000. They are closely related to the University of Mons and historically to the former Université de Mons-Hainaut and the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons. These two businesses started their activities in the years 1994-1995 when the European Objectif 1 programme was launched. From then on, they have benefited from the generous financial support of the European Union and the Walloon Region.
Up to now, nearly 20 million euros have been invested (on buildings and mainly on equipment) in Materia Nova and some 9 million euros (building and equipment) in Multitel. Materia Nova is specialized in the development of new materials and environmental technologies. Research at Multitel is focused on the fields of telecommunications and signal and image processing.
60 highly qualified researchers work at Multitel. There are 80 at Materia Nova. And all of them put their technological know-how to the use of companies and research centres (SME and multinationals) that call upon them for patent development or for the development of innovating products..
