Institute for New Media Art Technology

The UMONS Institute for New Media Art Technology (NUMEDIART) ( ) was established in 2010 as an extension of the NUMEDIART Programme of Excellence which was funded by the Région wallonne (Belgian regional government) from 2007 until 2012. The Institute was founded as the result of many years of preparation and has led to UMONS achieving international recognition in the field of sound, image, video, gestures and biosignals processing for applications where human-computer interaction aims to prompt emotion.

NUMEDIART’s mission is to provide educational training and research in the field of digital art technology, while capitalising on the momentum of Mons 2015, and to contribute to the development and creation of new activities in the creative industry sector.

Its activities are guided by strategic consulting of the NUMEDIART Consortium, comprised of 15 members based in Wallonia, including representatives of research, arts, entertainment and business. The Consortium meets regularly and provides an optimal match between the themes of research projects, conducted by the Institute, and regional needs in order to contribute to scientific, economic and cultural development.

The Institute has also established collaborations with:

  •  schools within the Pôle hainuyer network in the field of digital art,
  • regional companies in the field of digital art (Walloon entrepreneurs in the sector of creative industries),
  • regional companies to carry out business projects related to technology for digital arts,
  • many universities and research centres in Europe and Canada, which specialise in the "arts / science / technology" domain.
