UMONS counts more than 300 researchers working in 6 faculties. These researchers take an active part in the progress of research by publishing work in scientific magazines, by depositing patents, by creating spin-offs or by taking part in European research projects. For example, UMONS created 6 spin-offs and currently takes part in ten European projects of the FP7 framework. Its expenditure in R & D for the year 2007 was close to the €25 million mark.
UMONS also created, or took part with others, in the creation of several research centres considered today as centers of excellence at the European level. These centres work with several hundreds researchers. Among these, the centres for novel materials: Materia Nova and INISMA , as well as media technologies: Multitel and CETIC .
