A Message from the Rector

The University of Mons (UMONS) was born from the association of the Faculty of Engineering and the University of Mons-Hainaut.

Operational as of 2009-2010, the University of Mons offers forty degree programmes within its six faculties (Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Faculty of Medecine and Pharmacy, Faculty of Engineering, Psychology and Education, Faculty of Sciences, Translation and Interpretation - EII, Warocqué Faculty of Economics and Management) and three institutes (Institute for Social sciences, Institute for Legal Sciences, Institute for Language Sciences).

The University looks back on a tradition of 170 years of knowledge accumulated in each of its faculties and is perfectly integrated into the social, economic and cultural life of the region.

UMONS strives to:

  • give students a high quality education: special attention is paid to the standard of teaching in a university with a human scale, based on instructors being reachable and close to students;
  • prepare students for their future professional life while encouraging their intellectual, cultural and human development: beyond the mere course content, intensive training in reflection, criticism, argumentation, the active search for information… instills skills that are essential for responsible citizens who will be the true actors of tomorrow's society;
  • enrich teaching through high quality research: the specificity of a university is its ability to count on instructor-researchers who enhance their teaching with results of large-scale research carried out within national and international networks;
  • contribute to the cultural and economic life of the region: built on a basis constituted by education and research, the university makes the knowledge that it develops available to society at large. Strongly rooted in its milieu and sensitive to its needs, UMONS is eager to take part in the development of its region by meeting expectations from cultural, economic and social actors as well as requests coming from companies and public or private organisations.

The entire UMONS community, its pedagogical and scientific network, its administration, as well as the financial means at its disposal, have been mobilised to fulfil these four objectives.

UMONS is well integrated in the town of Mons, the capital of Hainaut. The city has a secular tradition of openness and is the cultural capital of the area. Mons is less than an hour’s drive from Brussels, Charleroi and Lille. The train ride from Paris is just 75 minutes.

The buildings of UMONS are spread throughout the historical centre of Mons, which is the original campus of the university: Every third person in the street in the town-centre is a higher education student. higher education .

The activities of UMONS take place mainly in Mons. However, day and evening classes are also held at the Charleroi campus, mainly in Computer Science, Psychology and Education, Business Management and Engineering.

The University of Mons is a founding partner of the Hainaut higher education consortium bringing together several Higher Education institutes besides the university. This cluster of training and research has establishments throughout the province of Hainaut and offers students more than 250 degree programmes with carryover curricula that are coherent and concerted within the consortium.

UMONS is also strongly implicated in international opening. It is involved in scientific collaborations across the globe, and hosts foreign students and researchers as well as supporting the mobility of its students and its researchers, particularly in European programmes such as ERASMUS.

If, one day, you find yourself at the University of Mons, you will have the opportunity to discover the passion of its professors, scientists and administrative and technical staff who pursue their mission of research and education with determination and enthusiasm. They will ensure that you benefit from excellent working conditions while you acquire the decisive added value of a UMONS education.
