Master's Degree in Education

Course Overview

The aim of the Master's degree in Education is to train professionals who are able to create innovative projects and improve their practices and thought processes in various fields of education and training. This course also enables students to develop useful skills in order to carry out research in educational sciences and to benefit from the bases necessary for a career in research.

The Master’s programme offers four specialist focuses:

  • Teaching and Learning in Formal Education;
  • Orthopedagogy and Social Care;
  • Educational Technology 
  • Research focus (not in 2015-2016).

These specialist focuses prepare the student for professional practice in such areas of education.

The Teaching and Learning in Formal Education focus is designed to develop professional skills in the context of initial teacher training and for the improvement of classroom practices. It comprises theoretical and practical teachings to develop actions and analytics skills (classroom practices, educational policies, programmes and curricula). Several elective modules offer training in the field of educational disciplines covered by core skills, foreign language teaching, teacher training or management of educational establishments.

This course is particularly suited to already qualified teachers and those who work in compulsory education. It allows them to examine their current practices and develop new techniques fuelled by research and sharing own experiences. It also enables them to consider other careers in teaching, such as teacher training or management.

The Orthopedagogy and Social Care focus is centred on school and social inclusion contexts. This course has two objectives. The first is to acquire various diagnostic tools for learners with special needs. Mastering these tools, combined with analysing educational models, allows students to develop individualised learning approaches for inclusive education systems. The second objective is to acquire participant research methods for the implementation of social and community intervention according to the principles of social inclusion. The focus of these methods is placed on social, family or school audiences who are more affected by the analysis and the logic of their actions.

The aim of the Teaching and Learning in Formal Education focus is to use various methods to integrate ICT (e.g. digital tools and the Internet, social media, software and applications for computers, tablets, smartphones, IWBs, etc.) in education and training devices for primary, secondary and tertiary education and in public and private companies. These methods include in-class activities, remote learning, a combination of the two, as well as individual activities, group work and MOOC.

The overall objective is for the students to learn how to integrate tools in techno-pedagogical devices so as to highlight their own appreciation for education. From needs analysis to assessment through teaching methodology and designing interfaces, different models, theories and practical examples will be implemented in order to adopt the most appropriate methods of using ICT in the classroom that could increase quality of learning.

The research focus prepares students for a potential career in research in education and training researchers.


Programme Structure

The Master’s programme totals at least 120 credits divided into two annual 60-credit blocks. In block 1, the programme includes a core curriculum covering the four specialist focuses (a set of compulsory courses worth 15 credits), allowing the student to acquire vision of education sciences that exceeds the strict boundaries of the specialist focus chosen, as well as prepare them for their thesis by taking a specific seminar.

Students can select three modules worth 15 credits from among the four specialist focuses, in other words, sets of lessons related to current major fields of education practice. These modules (compulsory / optional / transversal / specific to the specialist focus) that the different specialist focuses offer are listed below.

Students must also complete two work placements of 300 hours (15 credits for each placement) and a Master thesis (30 credits).

Skills and Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the Master’s degree in Education, students will be able to: 

  • analyse an educational situation in reference to theories and methodological approaches resulting from developments in educational sciences; 
  • develop and support a teaching-learning device, and implement and evaluate it; 
  • communicate and exchange information in a structured and adapted way to the intended purpose and relevant public; 
  • work effectively with different actors as part of a team or a network of professionals; 
  • act ethically and professionally; 
  • assess and pursue professional and personal development; 
  • master scientific research methods in educational sciences.

And after?

Students with a Master’s degree in Education can then go onto to study for the Certificate of Teaching for Upper Secondary Education (AESS) or a PhD/doctoral training (3rd cycle) in Psychology and Education. Based on an admissions application, students also have equal access to certain Specialised Master programmes, for example, the Specialised Master’s Degree in Higher Education Pedagogy.



The Master's Degree in Education is a full-time course 

  • taught on the Mons campus during the day,
  • and on the Charleroi campus in the evenings and on Saturday mornings (this is usually more suited to adults returning to education).
